Our Work / Japan Centre

Challenge

The space needed to be both practical and theatrical, offering shoppers a unique blend of trendy yet authentic Japanese shopping, alongside dining and entertainment. The design would need to put the food at the very centre, making excellent use of the space to maximise returns while producing a destination environment with a range of experiences. It would also need to translate the existing Japan Centres brand heritage into a physical space.

Solution

The CADA team produced a dynamic food hall experience that blends contemporary Japanese dining, shopping and experiences. From an identity perspective, CADA produced an evolved version of the Japan Centre branding, and reflected this in all category and wayfinding signage.

From a merchandising perspective, food was put at the centre of the food hall’s identity using vibrant packaging and food displays, emphasised by being positioned against neutral counters. Materiality was a crucial aspect of the CADA brief response, and the studio worked very hard to select materials that produced an elegant interior that showcased products well as well as reflecting the brand’s Japanese heritage and contemporary style.
