I’ve been wanting to try Sticks’n’Sushi for a while now and my birthday offered the perfect opportunity to pay them a visit. My partner and I headed down to their Covent Garden branch to experience it for ourselves and boy, we weren’t disappointed.
It’s my first time visiting Sticks’n’Sushi, and one which I really enjoyed. The Sticks ‘n’ Sushi concept was first conceived in Denmark 18 years ago by brothers Jens and Kim Rahbek. Both come from a Japanese/Danish background and somehow thought up the idea of fusing the two cuisines together. This has led to them recieving critical acclaim and some seriously good food.
The restaurant’s design is very cool, with exposed bricks, dark woods and low lighting. We were greeted by our lovely waitress Dania, who was happy to take us through the new menu and give us some fantastic recommendations. We started off with cocktails, ordering a Stix Spritz and a Keroppi – both really fresh and perfect for the summer.
Dania encouraged us to order some Ebi bites (Tempura Shrimp) and Hotate Kataifi (Scallops in kataifi with trout roe) which were both delicious and not to be missed!
We followed it with a platter of ‘Mixed Emotions’ and ‘Man Food’, wanting to try as many different dishes as possible. ‘Mixed Emotions’ was the first to arrive – the fish so fresh it had a delicate and light flavour.
- Nigiri – salmon, tuna and shrimp
- Maki – Pink Alaska, spicy tuna and gypsy roll
- Sticks – pork belly, miso marinated mackerel and chicken meatballs
- Edamame beans
Next came ‘Man Food’, a platter filled with Sticks. First, we dug into the spare ribs, which fell off the bone. The panko duck breast was equally as delicious, and the pork belly didn’t disappoint either. Also included was:
- Chicken meatballs
- Chicken with chilli & teriyaki
- Emmental cheese with bacon
- Chilli dip
- Edamame beans
To finish came a beautiful Marcel chocolate cake which was topped with chocolate pearls. The portion may have been small, but it was rich, creamy and totally satisfying – the perfect end to a great meal.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. The interior, food and waiting staff worked together to create the perfect birthday meal.
