The Terroirs Restaurant Group opened Brawn back in 2010. Since then, Brawn has received critical acclaim from passionate foodies around the globe. I decided it was high time I knew what all the fuss was about, so I headed to Columbia Road for dinner.

The interior is simple, using reclaimed mix and match school furniture sourced from East London and Parisian salvage companies. It feels down to earth and ‘cool’, unlike most restaurants held in such high regard.

The menu* holds the same simplicity as its aesthetic, serving rustic French food and a beautiful selection of natural wines. With little knowledge of wines, the staff were only too happy to assist us, informing us of the history of the wine and why it would compliment the particular food we had chosen. We were thrilled – its not everyday the waiting staff are willing to dedicate additional time to their customers and we greatly appreciated it.

Anyway, back to the food. I kicked off the meal with duck hearts; beautifully melting meat which sat on top of a thing disc of sourdough. The textures and the flavours worked wonderfully together, leaving me very excited for the main and dessert to come. My partner played safe, ordering the mozzarella, Serrano ham and melon, a dish I would normally tut at. However, the quality and ripeness of the produce was stunning and flecks of mint leaves between the white, pink and orange helped lift the subtle flavours of the dish.

For our mains we ordered the Rabbit Tagliatelli and the Lamb neck with berlotti beans, both deeply comforting and equally as delicious. The portions are generous and hearty so be prepared to leave feeling stuffed.

Brawn is renowned for its panna cotta, so I knew I just simply had to try it. Quite honestly, this is the best panna cotta I have ever eaten. Generally, I am not a dessert person and intended to take a couple of bites and slide the plate across the table for my partner to polish off, but I just couldn’t stop. With the texture of clotted cream, a tiny shimmer of a wobble and a pool of sharp-sweet juice from the macerated raspberries and strawberries, it is genuinely incredible.

We had a fabulous evening and we’re already planning our return. Très bien
